Wine Improves Health and Wellness?
You may have heard that drinking a glass or two of red wine each day can help reduce your risk of heart disease. Too good to be true? Good news, it is true! Studies have found that moderate consumption of alcohol raises HDL cholesterol (the “good” type that helps sweep cholesterol deposits out of your arteries and protects against a heart attack). In particular, red wine might offer the greatest benefit for lowering heart disease risk and death because it contains higher levels of natural plant chemicals-such as resveratol- that have antioxidant properties and might protect artery walls.
However, before you raise a glass and toast to your heart, know that alcohol does have its adverse effect too. Too much alcohol is well known to raise blood pressure, contribute to obesity, and increase risk of stroke and heart disease. Excessive drinking can also cause cirrhosis of the liver and increase risk of liver cancer. The benefits of alcohol on heart health have been found only with moderate intake of alcohol. For men that is 2 glasses of wine or beer, one for women. It is all right to enjoy your drinks, but do it in moderation!
In his recent National Day Rally speech, PM Lee painted a rather dismal picture of the diabetes situation in Singapore and declared war on it. One in nine Singaporeans has diabetes and it is a major cause of death and disability in our current society. Good news is, many of those death and disabilities can be prevented if diabetes was detected early and managed well. Another good news is that diabetes is a lifestyle disease, that is, the risk of contracting diabetes can be reduced by eating healthy and exercising!
Many of us might be unsure on how to eat healthy, exercise properly and where to get screened for diabetes. Fortunately for us, the Health Promotion Board has that covered with its BEAT diabetes campaign. It stands for Be aware, Eat right, Adopt an active lifestyle and Take control. Full details of this campaign can be obtained as this website: https://www.healthhub.sg/programmes/87/diabetes-mellitus.
Basically all the information we need regarding preventing, screening and control of diabetes can be obtained from that website. Do not hesitate any further, take part in the war against diabetes!
