All You Need To Know About HIFU Treatment in 2023
1. What is HIFU and how does it work?
HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It delivers ultrasound energy targeting skin depths at 1.5mm, 3mm and 4.5mm to treat the superficial and deeper skin layers as well as the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System). SMAS layer is where plastic surgeons target during a traditional surgical facelift. The ultrasound energy is converted to heat causing the skin cells to undergo cellular damage. The damage then stimulates collagen production to achieve lifting and tightening effect of the skin. It is 100% non-invasive, safer and more affordable than the traditional surgical facelift.
2. What can be treated by HIFU?
- Fine lines, wrinkles and saggy skin
- Double chin
- Turkey neck
- Achieve More V-shaped face and more defined jaw
- Reduce cheek fat (jowl reduction)
It can be applied on forehead, eye and brow, cheeks, chin, neck. It also comes with additional hand pieces that can be used to target areas like arm and bra areas, tummy, flank and inner thigh.
3. Is the procedure painful?
It is a relatively comfortable procedure as it does not involve injections. However as HIFU uses high energy to target deeper layers of skin, you may experience some mild aching sensation during the procedure. Numbing cream will be applied before the procedure to minimise the discomfort level. You may also take oral painkiller prior to the procedure to further reduce the discomfort.
4. Will there be any downtime?
Downtime is very minimal as it does not damage the surface of the skin. You may experience mild redness with or without mild puffiness after the procedure. These will usually subside after a few hours. Most people can immediately get back to normal routine.
5. How many session is needed? When will the results start to show and how long the results would last for?
Only 1 medical grade HIFU treatment is needed to produce results. It takes about 10 to 12 weeks for the results to be visible as collagen takes time to be produced. Some immediate tightening effects from the heat can be observed post procedure. The results can be maintained with 1 HIFU treatment every 12 to 18 months.
