How to get rid of blackheads?

We often get asked, “How to get rid of blackheads? Can I get rid of blackheads permanently?”

Our answer: Blackheads cannot be permanently removed but you can reduce the blackheads on your skin.

In this article, we’re sharing some tips to reduce and treat blackheads.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads are also call comedones. A comedo is a clogged hair follicle in the skin. They are formed when our skin produces excess sebum and dead skin cells which clogs up the pores of the skin. The sebum is oxidized and turns black when exposed to the air.

Open comedones are called “blackheads” because of the surface pigment:

Ways to remove/ prevent blackheads

Skincare Routine

Blackheads prevention starts from your usual skincare routine at home.

It’s essential to adopt a proper skincare routine to remove the sebum and reduce production of sebum. It helps to fight blackheads by keeping your skin healthy. Use good daily skin care including cleanser, toner, and moisturiser to keep skin healthy and moisturised. Our Heathsprings Clarifying Facial Cleanser can remove make up, help to clear acne and comedones, leaving skin clean and moisturized.

However, daily face wash is not enough to get rid of the buildup. Have regular exfoliation with facial scrubs twice a week, or use a small amount of salicylic or glycolic-acid exfoliant on your skin up to three times a week. Use treatment creams that contain salicylic acid and retinoids — Consult a doctor for a retinoid prescription to treat mild blackheads.

Treatment in Clinic

Existing blackheads can be difficult to clear at home. It’s recommended to visit a clinic for treatments to treat the condition. Chemical peel, microdermabrasion, ultrasound peel or Laser peel are some of the popular and effective treatments to remove the blackheads.

Chemical peels can help to speed up the cell turnover rate and is especially useful for acne-prone skin. The dirt and oil clogged inside your pores will come to the skin surface and the dead skin cells will shed, leaving skin with a clearer and brighter overall complexion. There are many types of chemical peels and it’s important to choose the right peel for different skin types.

Microdermabrasion can help to reduce oil production, blackheads, and refining skin texture. It removes the top layer of dead skin cells and exposes the ‘fresh’ ones underneath. It’s often combined with PDRN or Rejuran which aids tissue regeneration and cell growth.

Light and laser based procedures can help reduce sebum production. It can also help to reduce pore size.

Prescription medication such as roaccutane can be very effective in reducing sebum production, reducing bacteria, and inflammation thereby reducing blackheads.
