  1. I’m curious. People say you need to protect your skin from light to prevent damage. Does that include visible light from devices like computer and handphones?

  • You are absolutely right! Visible light (e.g. blue light) does have a role in causing skin aging. In fact, visible light comprises of at least 40% solar irradiation. It even has deeper penetration into the skin than the feared UV radiation given its longer wavelength.
  • When this happens, this light results in the production of unwanted chemicals including that of “proinflammatory cytokines” which are a group of chemicals you really want to avoid producing in specific layers of skin.
  1. This sounds scary. I heard it can cause pigmentation which I really want to avoid. Is it true?

  • Yes, it is. Pigmentation caused by visible light is believed to be mediated by the activation of a particular receptor called Opsin. This then leads to chemical changes and the production of pigments called Melanin.

  • The sun is by far the largest producer of blue light, and coupled with daily and frequent digital device use in sunny Singapore, one can be expected to suffer from intense blue light exposure. Therefore, to avoid harmful sun and light exposure, do invest in broad-spectrum sunscreens and proper screen filters for your digital devices.
  • Given our sunny climate, we suggest daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher. Don’t forget to reapply it every 2-3 hours if you are outdoors to protect your skin! If you are looking for further protection indoors, coloured formulations (tinted sunscreens) containing iron oxide do provide additional protection from blue light.
  1. My skin is already sadly damaged and pigmented. I’m not keen for invasive treatments. What can I do about it?

  • Advances in medical science can thankfully provide some solutions! For starters, Hydroquinone cream can be applied to the affected areas once or twice daily for 2-4 months and up to 6 months. There are alternatives even if you are allergic to such creams. However, you will need a doctor’s prescription for these creams and not all doctors may be familiar with such treatment unless they have an interest in this area.
